Hourly fruit picking pay

Many picking jobs pay an hourly rate under the Horticulture Award. From 1 July 2026, adult Level 1 rates are:

Full-time / part-time: $25.74/hr
Casual (includes 25% loading): $32.18/hr

Level 2 adult rates are $26.44/hr and $33.05/hr casual. Classification depends on duties and how long you remain at Level 1.

Piece rates

Piece rates pay per bin, tray, bucket or kilogram. They are permitted under the Horticulture Award when the piecework rules are followed. Fast pickers can earn more than the hourly minimum; slow days can fall short — which is why the minimum guarantee and your own records matter.

Minimum wage guarantee

Piece rate is not a loophole to pay below the applicable entitlement. Under Horticulture Award piecework rules, arrangements are designed so an average competent worker can earn at least the relevant minimum. If your effective hourly rate is consistently below your classification minimum, raise it with the employer and check Fair Work guidance.

Worked example

$3.50 per tray × 60 trays = $210
8 hours worked → $210 ÷ 8 = $26.25/hr effective

Compare $26.25/hr with casual Level 1 ($32.18/hr) or your actual classification. In this example the effective rate sits below casual Level 1.

Casual employment

Most backpacker picking roles are casual. You should see casual loading reflected in the higher hourly rate (or in how piece guarantees are calculated). Ask for the award name and classification in writing before you start.

Payslips and records

Keep every payslip (employer name, ABN, hours, rate, deductions)
Note start/finish times yourself each day
Record bins/trays/kg picked if on piece rate
Photograph piecework agreements

Super

Eligible pickers generally receive Super Guarantee at 12% on ordinary time earnings, separate from take-home wages.

Common questions

Is fruit picking always piece rate?

No. Many farms pay hourly; some mix both depending on crop and crew.

Does 88-day work change the pay rate?

No. Specified work for visa purposes does not reduce your Fair Work pay entitlements.
