Western Australia is enormous — it covers about a third of Australia. For backpackers, this means extraordinary diversity: from the fruit orchards of the South West and the grain farms of the Wheatbelt, to the iron ore mines of the Pilbara and the pearling operations of Broome. The season for many WA crops runs later than eastern states, which means backpackers who have finished work in Queensland or Victoria can often head west to extend their earning period. The South West region, including the Swan Valley, Margaret River, Manjimup and Pemberton, offers wine, apples, stone fruit and vegetable work. The Carnarvon region on the mid-coast grows tomatoes, capsicum and bananas. The Kimberley has pastoral and tourism work in a spectacular and remote setting.

Accommodation and housing in Western Australia

Perth has a large backpacker hostel scene, particularly in Northbridge and Fremantle. In Manjimup and Carnarvon, employer-arranged accommodation is common during harvest. Broome has backpacker hostels year-round. The Kimberley is remote, and accommodation needs to be arranged in advance — most regional employers will help with this.

Getting around Western Australia

Distances in WA are huge. Perth to Broome by road is over 2,000 km. Integrity Coaches and Greyhound cover major routes. Internally, Perth's Transperth bus and rail network is good. For farm work, a car is almost essential outside Perth. Consider joining a carpool via hostel noticeboards or Facebook groups. Domestic flights to the Kimberley are relatively affordable.

Practical tips for working in Western Australia

WA's seasons often run 4–8 weeks later than the eastern states — this is a major advantage if you need to complete 88 days.
In Manjimup, the apple harvest typically runs May–August. Contact local labour hire firms in April.
The Pilbara and Kimberley are extremely hot and remote. Take heat seriously and ensure you're genuinely prepared.
Perth's east end (Northbridge, Mount Lawley) has a large backpacker community with strong job networks.
Western Australia has strict biosecurity rules at the state border — don't bring fresh fruit or vegetables in.

Yes. WA has extensive approved regional areas covering the South West, Carnarvon, Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne and Wheatbelt regions. Because WA's seasons often run later than the eastern states, many backpackers come to WA to finish their 88 days after spending time in Queensland or NSW.

What is the best region in WA for fruit picking?

Manjimup in the South West is the most established for apples and pears (May–August). Carnarvon on the mid-west coast is excellent for tomatoes and capsicum (year-round but peaking in winter). Kununurra in the East Kimberley grows mangoes, melons and tropical fruit (September–January).

Can backpackers work in mining in WA?

Mining jobs in WA are available but are generally harder to access for backpackers. Most mine sites require formal safety certifications (Working at Heights, White Card, etc.) and require FIFO (fly-in fly-out) rosters.
