Margaret River is one of those rare regional destinations where backpackers can realistically combine work, beaches, vineyards, nightlife, good food and a proper social scene.
It sits around 3 to 3.5 hours south of Perth, in the heart of one of Australia's best-known wine regions. Tourism WA describes the town as relaxed, creative and nature-focused, with cafés, surf shops, galleries and a strong local food-and-wine culture.
For Working Holiday makers, Margaret River is attractive for three main reasons:

This is not a place where you finish your shift and wonder what to do for the next 12 hours. You can surf in the morning, work at a winery or restaurant, grab dinner in town and spend your days off exploring beaches and breweries.

Margaret River is in Western Australia's South West. From Perth, expect roughly 3 to 3.5 hours by car, depending on traffic and exactly where you are staying.

For jobs, don't restrict yourself to the town centre. A vineyard advertised as "Margaret River" might actually be 15, 25 or 40 minutes away by car.
What is Margaret River weather like?
Margaret River has a mild Mediterranean-style climate: warm, relatively dry summers and cooler, wetter winters. Summer and early autumn are excellent for outdoor work and tourism; winter becomes noticeably wetter. Winter is not dead — restaurants, wineries and tourism businesses still operate, and vineyard work can happen outside vintage.

When is grape harvest season?
If you are specifically looking for vineyard work, February and March are the months to watch most closely. Margaret River's vintage typically ramps up around this period, although exact dates vary by year, variety and vineyard.
If your aim is grape picking or vintage work, start contacting employers before February rather than arriving once harvest is already in full swing.

This is where Margaret River becomes stronger than many classic farm towns. The wine region has around 100 cellar doors and attracts large numbers of overnight visitors, so hospitality and tourism can matter just as much as agricultural work.
When is the best time to go?
- December–January — One of the strongest periods for tourism and hospitality. A good time to arrive before vintage starts.
- February–March — The key period for vineyard vintage work. Warm weather, grape harvest and still plenty of tourists. Probably the sweet spot if you want both work and lifestyle.
- April–May — Vintage winds down, but tourism remains active. The Margaret River Pro and autumn events can keep the region lively.
- June–August — Cooler and wetter. Fewer beach days, but wineries, restaurants and winter events continue.
- September–November — Weather improves, tourism builds again and vineyards begin preparing for the coming vintage.
Do you need a car?
You can survive without one. You will have far more job opportunities with one. Margaret River town itself is compact, but vineyards, wineries, beaches and resorts are spread across a large region. Before accepting a job, ask exactly where the work location is and whether staff normally drive themselves.
How to get to Margaret River
Drive from Perth
Driving is the easiest option. Allow around 3 to 3.5 hours. A car also gives you access to more vineyards, beaches and nearby towns such as Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup.
Coach from Perth
Transwa's SW1 coach runs from East Perth through Bunbury, Busselton, Dunsborough and Yallingup before stopping in Margaret River. It is a reasonable way to reach town; the bigger question is transport to work afterwards.
Fly
Busselton Margaret River Airport is around a 45-minute drive from Margaret River town. Flying can make sense depending on where you are arriving from, but long-term workers still benefit from access to a car once there.
Where should backpackers stay?
If you're coming to Margaret River to work, prioritise location, kitchen access, social atmosphere and parking over luxury.
Margaret River Backpackers
A practical first base if you have just arrived and want to meet other travellers, hear about local jobs and work out where you want to live longer term. Staying in town also makes cafés, shops and nightlife easier without a car.
Bridgefield Guest House
A more comfortable private-room option within walking distance of the town centre, cafés and restaurants. Better suited to travellers who want more privacy than a hostel dorm.
Share houses
Once you have work, a share house can make far more sense than paying nightly hostel rates for several months. Ask co-workers and other backpackers — local rooms often get filled through word of mouth. Accommodation gets tighter and more expensive during summer and vintage, so book your first stay before arriving if you are coming around February or March.
Where should you eat?
Margaret River is much better for food than most farm-work towns. You can eat casually, have a pub meal, or spend a serious amount at a winery restaurant.

Backpacker rule: cook most nights, have a Brewhouse night once a week, and save the expensive winery lunch for a day off. Margaret River can become expensive very quickly if every meal turns into a tourism experience.
Major wineries and employers
There are too many vineyards and wineries to list all of them, which is a good problem. One well-known example is Voyager Estate, south of Margaret River town, but don't make the mistake of applying only to famous estates.
Smaller vineyards, vineyard contractors and seasonal staffing businesses can be more relevant for backpackers. Search for vineyard contractors, vintage teams, winery cellar hands, vineyard hands, grape pickers, bottling and packing, and cellar-door staff. Also search Margaret River + Cowaramup + Wilyabrup, not just Margaret River town.
Does vineyard work count for the 88 days?
Potentially, yes. Eligible plant cultivation in an eligible regional area can count as specified work for Working Holiday visa purposes. Actual vineyard cultivation can therefore be relevant.
The distinction matters: picking grapes is not the same as serving wine. Working in a vineyard may qualify under agricultural specified work; working in a cellar-door restaurant or café does not automatically become agricultural work simply because the restaurant belongs to a winery.

What is life in Margaret River actually like?
This is why people stay. You are surrounded by forests and vineyards, but you can also finish work and be at the ocean shortly afterwards. The region is one of Australia's major surfing destinations, and wine, food and outdoor life are a big part of the local culture.

That is the difference between Margaret River and some other regional-work locations: you are not simply enduring a town for 88 days. You can actually enjoy living here.
The downside: Margaret River is not cheap
Margaret River attracts tourists and Perth weekenders. That helps create jobs, but it also pushes up accommodation, restaurants, drinks and weekend spending. If your only goal is to make as much money as possible and spend almost nothing, another agricultural town may suit you better. If your goal is to work, meet people and actually enjoy your Working Holiday, Margaret River becomes much more compelling.

- How many hours are currently available?
- Where exactly is the workplace?
- Do I need my own car?
- Is accommodation available?
- How long do you need me for?
- Is the job vineyard work, winery work or hospitality?
- If I am completing specified work, does my actual role qualify?
For vintage roles, also ask: "How many weeks do you expect vintage work to last?" Vintage can be intense but relatively short.
Our verdict: is Margaret River good for backpackers?
Very. It is probably one of the best all-round Working Holiday destinations in Western Australia.
Why we like it
- Jobs are not limited to one industry: vineyards, wineries, restaurants, accommodation and tourism all matter.
- February and March can be particularly interesting because vintage adds seasonal work.
- The lifestyle is genuinely good: beach, surf, food, wine, breweries and other backpackers.
- It is close enough to Perth that going there is far less of a commitment than Carnarvon or Kununurra.
The negatives
- Accommodation can be expensive.
- A car significantly increases your options.
- During the most attractive periods, you will not be the only backpacker looking for work.
