FIFO means fly-in fly-out. You live away from the mine, fly in for a rostered block, sleep in camp, then fly home. It describes the travel pattern — not a job title and not a salary.
Perth is the best-known FIFO airport because of Western Australia’s iron ore and gold sector. Brisbane and Mackay feed Queensland coal. FIFO is competitive from those cities. Many backpackers get their first site days through residential towns or contractors instead.
