Airlie Beach
Airlie Beach is the mainland gate for the Whitsunday islands. The lagoon on the foreshore is free and is the town swimming spot, because the beach itself is tidal mudflats at low water. Conway National Park walks sit behind the town. Island days, sailing and reef trips are the paid layer. The Bruce Highway does not run through the main street — Shute Harbour Road is a spur, so a coastal itinerary should budget the detour instead of treating Airlie as a five-minute highway stop.
Suggested time: 3–4 days, more if you are waiting on a sailing.
