Adelaide
Adelaide is the fork between the Great Ocean Road east, the Barossa and McLaren Vale wine valleys, and the Stuart Highway north to the outback. The central markets, the riverbank and a free look from Mount Lofty are the city layer. Kangaroo Island needs a ferry from Cape Jervis and should be its own stage. The road to Darwin is sealed via Port Augusta, but it is remote once you pass the Flinders Ranges turnoffs.
Suggested time: 2 days, then either the coast or the Stuart Highway.
